Open Roles

Build the reactors. Power the AI era.

We are hiring engineers who want to work on the power infrastructure problem that nobody else is tackling at this scale. Small team, hard problems, direct contribution. Oakland, California.

Why Applied Atomics

Actual reasons to join, not a recruiting pitch

The power problem for AI infrastructure is real and getting worse. Grid interconnection queues in most US markets now run five to seven years. Data center operators trying to build GPU capacity in 2027 or 2028 are looking at power options that do not yet exist for their requirements. We are building one of those options.

If you join us now, you will be one of a small number of people who see every design decision, every regulatory discussion, and every partner conversation. The work is hard. The team is small. The decisions you make will be in the product that goes to NRC for licensing review.

Nuclear and software in the same week

Our engineers write reactor physics models and ML code in the same sprint. If you have only ever worked in one of those domains, this is where they combine in an interesting way.

Direct contribution, no bureaucracy

Four people total. No middle layers, no quarterly planning theater. If you build it, you own it and you explain it to the NRC reviewer.

Oakland location, Bay Area ecosystem

National lab access, university research connections, and a data center and AI company concentration that makes customer conversations easy. Oakland is a good place to build this company.

The timing is right

NRC Part 53 created new licensing pathways for advanced reactor designs in 2023. The AI infrastructure power demand is real and growing. The gap between what operators need and what markets provide is not closing. This is the right moment for this company to exist.

Currently Hiring

Open roles

We hire for specific capability gaps, not org chart slots. These are the gaps we have now.

Engineering

Nuclear Thermal Engineer

Thermal-hydraulic analysis of the primary circuit and heat exchanger system. Reactor thermal margin modeling. Validation of simulation models against NRC design basis accident scenarios. Requires graduate-level nuclear engineering background and experience with thermal analysis codes (RELAP, TRACE, or equivalent).

AI and Software

AI/ML Engineer (Reactor Control)

Machine learning model development and tuning for the AI dispatch control layer. Closed-loop control system optimization in the simulation environment. Sensor data pipeline architecture and real-time inference at 100ms cycle time. Strong ML background, ideally with experience in industrial control systems or safety-critical software environments.

Express interest
Regulatory Affairs

Regulatory Affairs Analyst

Support NRC pre-application engagement, licensing documentation preparation, and regulatory correspondence. Familiarity with 10 CFR Part 50 and Part 52/53 required. Experience with advanced reactor designs or SMR licensing programs strongly preferred. Works directly with Rebecca on all regulatory submissions and NRC staff meeting preparation.

Engineering

Mechanical Design Engineer

Pressure vessel structural design, containment building civil integration, and secondary cooling circuit mechanical layout. ASME Code Section III background preferred. Experience with compact or modular plant configurations. Works with Sofia on the physical plant design and supports the NRC safety analysis report sections covering structural and mechanical systems.

Express interest
Business Development

Business Development (Data Center Sector)

Partner pipeline development and technical alignment conversations with data center operators and infrastructure developers. Background in data center power or infrastructure sales strongly preferred. You will be the person who gets our technology in front of the right decision-makers and guides them through the Tier 1 and Tier 2 partner process.

What it actually looks like to work here

We are four people. Titles are accurate but nobody is managing anyone. A typical week involves reactor simulation runs, a call with NRC staff, partner engineering questions, and debugging the control loop. Sometimes those happen in the same afternoon.

We do not have an HR department, a company values deck, or a performance review cycle. We have a shared Slack, a simulation environment that we all have access to, and a genuine conviction that the problem we are working on matters. If that sounds like the right environment, we want to hear from you.

What we value

  • + Deep domain knowledge over generalist range
  • + Saying what is true over what sounds good
  • + Precision in technical communication
  • + Working across nuclear engineering and software without treating either as inferior
  • + Comfort with ambiguity at the technical frontier

Location and compensation

In-person in Oakland, California. Compensation is early-stage startup: below large-company base salaries, meaningful equity, standard health benefits. We do not pretend otherwise.
